Kelutral (ˈkɛl.ut.ɾal) means Hometree in Na'vi, and that's exactly what we want Kelutral.org to be: a living, growing home for the James Cameron's AVATAR community, where fans of all stripes can make lifelong friends!

Kelutral.org was created in 2020 by a team of both learners and teachers to bring Na'vi to a modern audience and promote a thriving community of Na'vi speakers. We aim to raise the standard of digital language learning communities and inspire a new generation of linguists through the beautiful language we love so much.

History of the Na'vi Language and James Cameron's AVATAR

James Cameron's AVATAR released in December of 2009, to resounding success. The movie featured a brand new constructed language that the Na'vi people from the film spoke. By early 2010, the first online gatherings of fans had begun, with most of the conversation focused around deciphering and reverse-engineering the few canon examples available at the time.

It wasn't long before the project caught the attention of USC Professor Paul Frommer, the linguist that James Cameron had hired to create the language for AVATAR. Frommer was highly enthusiastic about the efforts of fans, and began to work with them to fill in the gaps in the gathered knowledge. These pioneering fans found the first organization to promote learning and teaching the Na'vi language: LearnNavi.org.

Over the next 10 years, the LearnNavi.org community would establish themselves as the foremost resource for Na'vi language learners, maintaining dictionaries, grammar compendiums and expansion projects for the language in conjunction with Paul Frommer and Lightstorm Entertainment.

In 2020, a core group of longtime learners and teachers recognized the opportunity to breathe fresh life into the Na'vi language community and AVATAR fanbase. They founded Kelutral.org with the intent of modernizing the learning experience.

Today, the Na'vi language community continues to work closely with Paul Frommer and Lightstorm Entertainment to expand on the language by asking clarifying questions and identifying gaps in the lexicon. Updates to the Na'vi language are published first on Paul Frommer's blog, Naviteri.org.
